Alan Rees
This setting, first published in 1967, was one of the most successful of the Masses published in the early post-Vatican II era. Like the other music of that time it fell out of use when the early translation changed – as is happening today. The 2010 Roman Missal is closer to that early version so this Mass has been revived, without much need for adaptation. The largest change is in the Memorial Acclamations, which have been woven out of the music for the Sanctus. Apart from the Gloria the mass is suitable for four-part singing. The Gloria is an eloquent, flowing, through-composed setting in free rhythm. This restrained, dignified Mass should be a valuable addition to the repertoire and a tribute to the memory of a much-loved composer.
